About the Book
Fractured Body, Shattered Dreams
A life shattered. A will unbroken. A journey to reclaim herself
It is the first novel in Rexanna Shumaker’s “Sea Oat Series”. A story of Rayne Morgan, whose dreams were different. She dared to break through the chains of her small town culture and didn’t join a regular college. Instead, with her courage and determination, she paved the way to her new independent city life and pursued her inner passion by joining a beauty school.
But a terrible accident changed everything: Rayne Morgan, who dared to break the shackles of her small town culture by enrolling in beauty school, suddenly faced life-changing injuries that shattered her body, her dreams, and her future. Struggling through surgeries, grueling therapy, and moments of despair, Rayne must lean on friends and family—and rediscover the strength buried in her own heart. As she tries to get pieces of her life together, she reflects and asks herself the most challenging question, “whether all this is worth fighting for?”
Read “Fractured Body, Shattered Dreams” to see how Rayne faced every challenge life throws in her way. This heartfelt story is about resilience, healing, and the courage it takes to start over. It’s a story for anyone who’s ever had to rebuild after life knocked them down.
Author’s notes & behind-the-scenes insights
Rexanna Shumaker took inspiration from the real-life recovery of a close friend. She saw that small tasks of kindness or encouraging words like a handwritten note can become a lifeline in dark times. In the emotional journey of Rayne, she infused her counseling background (M.A. in Mental Health Counseling, Marshall University) to make sure it sounds realistic. In early drafts, Rexanna experimented with alternating viewpoints, but ultimately chose Rayne’s single perspective to keep the story intimate and raw.
