Rexanna Shumaker
Rexanna Shumaker has always been drawn to stories—both the ones she lived and the ones she now writes. Before becoming an author, she spent years helping people feel their best as a hairdresser and salon owner of Hair Today Inc. Drawing from that empathy, today, she expresses the same feelings in her writing, delivering stories that speak to your heart and boost the spirit of resilience.
Her journey turned when life took her to earning a master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from Marshall University, where she also worked with the West Virginia Division of Rehabilitation Services, supporting others through their toughest moments. All these experiences gave her a really deep understanding of the ups and downs of life.
In 2019, Rexanna decided to share stories of hope and healing that she has experienced all along her journey. She started with herself and shared her memoir, “Daughter of Life’s Longing,” in which she opened a window to her life in rural West Virginia and offered candid reflections of family, faith, and finding strength in the tough times.
Now, she’s crafting “The Sea Oat Series”, beginning with “Fractured Body, Shattered Dreams” —a powerful story about a young woman’s fight to rebuild her life after tragedy. Her friend’s strength and determination to recover from a serious accident inspired her to write this book, where she highlights how small acts of kindness can become lifelines.
It was during a “Dinner with an Author” event at Bates Memorial Presbyterian Church that Rexanna first spoke publicly about the raw emotions and real-life lessons behind her memoir—a conversation that resonated deeply with everyone in the room. These moments taught Rexanna that even when life seems broken, there is always a path forward, and she hopes her readers carry that light with them long after the final page.
When she’s not writing, you’ll find her traveling, creating stained glass art, sewing, or spending time with her spirited cat, Skeeter, who keeps her on her toes. Rexanna’s writing is honest, emotional, and rooted in the resilience she’s witnessed and lived herself. Through her books, Rexanna invites readers to celebrate compassion and the power of telling your truth.
